BMW iDrive Hits 20-Year Milestone | BMW Near McAllen, TX
This year, BMW iDrive turns 20 years old. That’s right: It’s been 20 years since BMW first announced the innovative display and operating system that has developed alongside the smartphone to deliver sensational connection, entertainment, navigation, convenience, safety, and more on the go.
As part of its 20th anniversary, BMW announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021 the next chapter in the iDrive system. So what does it entail? That’s not entirely clear. BMW was intentionally vague in its description of the new phase of BMW iDrive (as there is more to come later this year), using phrases like “takes the burgeoning relationship between a BMW and its driver to a new level” and “bridges the gap between analogue and digital technology.”
What we do know is that we should expect more instances of smart technology that automate more of the driving experience. Perhaps the next phase of BMW iDrive takes us further down the path of autonomous driving, with improved parking, lane-centering, automatic accelerating braking, and other technologies.
Origin Story
The BMW iDrive system first changed the world when it debuted in a BMW 7 Series, way back in 2001. The color screen in the instrument panel with a rotary dial allowed drivers to access telecommunications functions, toggle through vehicle settings, and access entertainment and navigation. It wasn’t long before other automotive giants followed suit — but BMW was truly the trendsetter.
