How to Choose Between Car Trims and Options
When you purchase a new BMW car or SAV®, you will not only need to decide on a specific model but also a specific trim. Trims, also called trim levels or grades, signify a specific set of standard features offered on a model, like the BMW 7 Series.
How Trims Work
In general, the base trim of any model is the least expensive, but it also comes with the fewest standard features and generally a less impressive engine. As you move up the trim ladder, the vehicle will add on luxury features, more innovative tech, and more potent engine options.
For example, the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan’s base mode is the 740i, but you can move up to the 750i or even the M series model, M760i xDrive.
How to Choose the Right Trim for You
So how do you know which trim level to choose? For starters, think about your budget. What is the max amount you are willing or able to spend? Then look at the trim lineup for the vehicle you are considering. Are there any that are over your budget? Right away, you can eliminate all of those options.
Then think about what features are important to you — ones that are nonnegotiable — as well as features that are nice-to-have. If only the higher of two potential trims in your budget had the nonnegotiable features, go with that model. But if they both have all your nonnegotiable features, consider going for the lower trim level (and thus the less expensive model). However, if both have your nonnegotiable features, both are within your price range, but only the higher trim level has one of your “nice-to-have” features, you will need to decide if that nice-to-have feature is worth the jump in price for the higher trim level.
