What to Include in Your Car Emergency Kit
In the last year, we have all learned about the importance of responding appropriately to emergencies. None of us likely foresaw a year where we wore masks, stayed away from loved ones, and had to protect ourselves against a deadly pandemic. But we listened to the experts and put a plan in place. But COVID-19 is just one type of emergency. When traveling in your vehicle — especially outside the city or in areas you aren’t familiar with — it’s important to have an emergency car kit at the ready. We recommend keeping these essential items in your trunk.
For the Weather
To protect yourself against hot Texas summers, torrential spring rains, and even our increasingly snowy winters, pack:
- Coats, gloves, hats, and scarves
- Blankets
- Battery-operated fans
- Rain ponchos
- Sun screen
- Insect repellant
For Your Health
If you have certain medical needs, like an inhaler or prescriptions, make sure the kit has an extra. You should also include:
- Extra face masks
- A first-aid kit
- Painkillers
For Sustenance
If you are stranded for more than a couple of hours, you will need food and water. Pack:
- A case of bottled water
- Non-perishable snacks, like protein bars and trail mix
For Solving Problems
Most importantly, emergencies call for solutions. Tackle whatever life throws at you with:
- A flashlight
- A battery-operated radio
- A power bank with extra phone chargers
- A toolkit and/or a multitool
- A spare tire
- Jumper cables
- Flares

Parents of children and dogs should remember things like diapers, baby formula, dog food, etc.
